"Towards a Resilient Future: Engineering Research on Social, Environmental, and Ethical Renewal."
The 4th International Research Conference of the Institute of Technology, University of Moratuwa (ITUM-IRC 2025) was successfully held on 9th October 2025 under the timely and impactful theme: “Towards a Resilient Future: Engineering Research on Social, Environmental and Ethical Renewal ” which aligns closely with the national Clean Sri Lanka initiative. Organised by the Research Unit of ITUM, under the guidance of Mrs. M. M. P. D. Samarasekara, this prestigious conference brought together academics, industry professionals, researchers and students to exchange knowledge and explore innovative solutions for a sustainable future.
The event commenced with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, symbolizing the illumination of knowledge. Dr. (Mrs.) Kalpana Galappaththi, Conference Chair, warmly welcomed attendees gathered at the Dr. T. A. G. Gunasekara Multifunctional Hall. The Director of ITUM, Major General (Retired) S. K. Thirunavukarasu, emphasised the significance of engineering research in fostering inclusivity, sustainability, and social responsibility.
The conference was graced by Senior Professor K. L. Wasantha Kumara, Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Sri Lanka, as the Chief Guest. In his address, he underscored the pivotal role of research in advancing technological development and driving national progress.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the keynote address delivered by Professor Ian Overton, Country Manager for Sri Lanka and Global Director for Water Data Science at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). His presentation, titled “Building Resilience in Social, Environmental, and Economic Systems,” explored the urgent need to develop adaptive, data-driven solutions to address escalating global challenges.
Adding further academic depth, Dr. (Mrs.) Kokila Madhuri Wijewickrama Abeykoon, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Textile and Clothing Technology, delivered a special address titled “Shaping a Resilient Future: The Role of Ergonomics in Optimising Human Performance,” which highlighted the importance of human-centred approaches in engineering design. Cultural vibrancy was woven into the event through a captivating traditional dance performance by ITUM students, celebrating Sri Lanka’s rich artistic heritage. In parallel with the main conference, a student poster session was organized providing a platform for Semester Four ITUM students to showcase their innovative research ideas.
The day featured 25 research paper presentations across four technical sessions, providing a vibrant platform for participants to share innovative research, exchange ideas and foster collaboration. The conference concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Eng. Kamalnath Jinadasa, member of the Research Unit who extended heartfelt appreciation to all contributors, participants and organisers for their dedication and effort in making the event a success.
The Proceedings of ITUM-IRC 2025 were officially published under ISSN 2773-7055, reinforcing ITUM’s continued commitment to the dissemination of knowledge and promoting sustainable development.
