ITUM Premises
ITUM in collaboration with the International Institute of Management Sciences (IIMS) held the ITUM-IIMS International Research Conference successfully on the 04th and 05th of November 2023. The conference was guided by the theme Industry 5.0: Prospect and Retrospect” that aimed at nurturing academic and research alliances and stimulating interdisciplinary dialogues on critical global issues. This conference was an integrated platform for academics, professionals, and experts from Sri Lanka, different states of India as well as all over the world to share their research findings, dissimilate their knowledge, and share experiences creating an effective platform to get together in a highly academic environment.
The inauguration ceremony was held on 04th November 2023 at ITUM with the participation of local and foreign attendees who had gathered to mark the commencement of this academic forum. The session was graced by the presence of Prof. V. K. Malhotra, Association President, Indian Economic Association, India, Dr. Roland Smith, Board Director, Chief Learning Officer, Brandix and Director, Global Learning Lab, Dr. Sandip Kar, President, Conference Organizing Committee, Chairman IIMS, India, Dr. Ershad Ali, Secretary General, Conference Organizing Committee, AIS, New Zealand, Prof. D.K. Madaan, Punjabi University, Patiala; Secretary, Indian Economic Association, and Major General (Rted.) S. K. Thirunavukarasu, Director, ITUM, foreign delegates, members of the academic and administrative staff, ITUM Board of Management, Alumni, invitees from the industry, and students of ITUM. Also, the session comprised several informative speeches made by the foreign delegates.
Further, the conference awarded a special Business Designer Award to Mr. A. N. P. S. J. Fonseka of Ceylon Green Innovators (Pvt) Ltd. for his innovative ideas to employ waste banana stems. Moreover, IIMS signed an MOU with Bangladesh, the host country of their next joint international conference. The inaugural session also featured a Cultural Show which showcased the diversity of Sri Lankan culture through Dance and Music. This event was presented by the Lecturer attached to the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies, ITUM students, and The Sri Lanka Army Dance Troup. The cultural event created a glamorous stage and it was highly admired by everybody who attended the session.
The second day of the conference featured several invited speakers including Keynote Speakers Prof. Satish Verma, G.N.D. University, Amritsar India, Prof. Veranja Karunarathna, Chairman, National Science and Technology Commission, Vice Chancellor and CEO, SLTC Research University, Sri Lanka and Dr. Dhulasi Birundha Varadarajan, Emeritus Professor, Senior Fellow, ICSSR, New Delhi and Department of Environmental Economics, Madurai Kamaraj University.
The conference was conducted under several tracks including Industry 5.0: Impact on Economic Development, Status of MSME Sector, Smart Manufacturing, Emerging Technologies and Consistent Skill Sets, Applied Health Care, Smart Education and Human Capital, Impact on Social Development, and Sustainable Environment. The abstract proceedings included more than 40 submissions, and 8 of them were from Sri Lanka; 7 from ITUM and 1 from UoM, highlighting the diverse research contributions from the country.
The conclusion of the 2023 ITUM-IIMS Joint Research Conference concluded with a resounding success and added a significant historical milestone to ITUM's legacy, ushering in a new era of possibilities in research.
