The 3rd International Research Conference of the Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa (ITUM-IRC 2024), organised by the Research Unit, was held on 18th December 2024. This conference, themed “Exploring New Frontiers: Innovative and Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to Sustainable Engineering Practices”, encompassed several key tracks, including: Sustainable Infrastructure and Mechanical Systems, Renewable Energy Systems and Smart Grid Technologies, Sustainable Materials and Green Manufacturing Processes, Digital Solutions for Sustainable Engineering and Interdisciplinary Approaches to Sustainability in Education.
The opening ceremony took place at Dr. TAG Gunasekara Multifunctional Hall and was attended by over 300 participants, including presenters, researchers, academics, administrative staff of ITUM, industry representatives, and ITUM students. The event began with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, symbolizing the illumination of knowledge and wisdom. Dr. (Mrs.) Kalpana Galappaththi, Conference Chair, delivered a warm welcome address, setting a positive tone for the day. Major General (Retired) S. K. Thirunavukarasu, Director of ITUM, also delivered an inspiring speech, emphasizing the significance of sustainable engineering practices in shaping the future.
The Chief Guest, Prof. U.P. Nawagamuwa, from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, delivered an insightful speech on the importance of sustainable engineering practices in addressing global challenges. A highlight of the opening ceremony was the keynote address by Dr. Ishara Dharmasena, Associate Professor at the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University, England. His presentation on ‘Super-Smart Textiles: A Cross-Disciplinary Journey Towards Future Wearable Technologies’ captivated the audience with its innovative vision for the future of engineering. Additionally, Associate Prof. (Mrs.) W. B. M. Thoradeniya, a senior lecturer in the Division of Civil Engineering, ITUM gave a special speech on ‘Multiple Intelligences and Sustainability in the Engineering Industry,’ offering thought-provoking insights into the intersection of education and industry in driving sustainable development.
The opening ceremony was also enriched by a vibrant and culturally captivating dance performance by ITUM students, adding a touch of tradition to the event. The formal proceedings concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks from Mrs. MMPD Samarsekara, Head of the Research Unit, expressing gratitude to all those involved in the success of the conference.
Throughout the day, 40 research papers were presented across five technical sessions, providing a rich platform for participants to share innovative ideas, disseminate their findings, and engage in stimulating discussions. ITUM-IRC 2024 provided an invaluable opportunity for academics, researchers, industry professionals, and students to collaborate, exchange knowledge, and advance the field of sustainable engineering.
