The ITUM Welfare Society proudly organized the Sinhala and Tamil New Year Morning Ceremony on 21st April 2025, bringing together the entire ITUM community in a joyful and culturally rich celebration. The event was graced by the presence of the Director of ITUM, Rtd. Major General Shantha Kumara Thirunavukarusu, along with all staff members.

The day commenced with religious observances at the Buddha statue within the ITUM premises, invoking blessings for the New Year. This was followed by the traditional milk boiling ceremony, symbolizing prosperity and new beginnings.

The formal proceedings began with a warm welcome address delivered by the President of the Welfare Society, Dr. Udara Bulathsinhala, setting a positive and festive tone for the day. The Director then addressed the gathering, extending his heartfelt New Year wishes to all staff members and appreciating the efforts of the organizing committee.

Following the formalities, a delightful New Year buffet was arranged, allowing everyone to enjoy traditional festive cuisine together in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The celebrations continued with the official commencement of the Awurudu Festival, starting with an energetic marathon held in front of the ITUM main building. Thereafter, a series of exciting and entertaining events took place at the ITUM grounds.

Among the highlights were the highly competitive and spirited games such as Kotta Pora (pillow fighting) and Kamba Adeema (tug of war), which drew enthusiastic participation. Adding to the fun and laughter were traditional games like Kana Mutti Bindeema (breaking the pot), Marking the Eye of the Elephant, Counting Papaw Seeds, and Bambara Divilla (top spinning)—all of which captivated the audience and brought smiles to everyone present.

In total, around 20 events were successfully conducted, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy. The day concluded with a grand awards ceremony, where prizes were presented to individual winners and victorious teams, celebrating their enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

This vibrant celebration truly reflected the spirit of unity, tradition, and joy, making it a memorable occasion for all members of the ITUM family.
