The International Day of Mathematics (IDM) is celebrated around the world on March 14 a day to enjoy, explore, and get creative with mathematics.
In alignment with this year’s theme, “Mathematics and Hope,” the Mathematics and Statistics Unit organized a Creative Expression Challenge from 9th to 20th March at the ITUM premises.
Students were invited to explore and demonstrate how mathematics creates hope and contributes to society in diverse areas such as education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, economic development, technological advancement, disaster management, personal achievement, and other disciplines. Participants expressed their ideas through a variety of creative formats, including Mathematical Posters, Short Mathematical Videos, Poems and Creative Writing, Mathematical Songs, Mathematical Quiz Games, Mathematical Storytelling, Mind Maps and Concept Maps, Math-in-Nature Photography, Mathematical Memes, Treasure Hunts, and Hackathons.
The challenge provided students with an opportunity to connect mathematical concepts learned in their modules with real-world applications while showcasing their creativity and innovation. Through active participation and collaboration with their peers, students not only deepened their appreciation of mathematics but also enhanced essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, decision-making, communication, creativity, and analytical thinking.
The event successfully highlighted the role of mathematics as a powerful tool for solving problems, inspiring innovation, and creating hope for a better future.
